Search did not disappear when AI assistants arrived. It split. Some of your buyers still click ten blue links; a growing share read a synthesised answer and contact whoever is named in it. Answer Engine Optimisation is the work of being named.
How answer engines choose sources
Assistants assemble answers from pages they can parse quickly and verify against other sources. That favours content with clear claims, explicit entities, and consistent facts across the web.
Pages that bury the answer under six paragraphs of preamble rarely get quoted. Pages that state the answer plainly in the first hundred words frequently do.
The four changes that matter most
Most of the practical work falls into four buckets.
- Answer-first structure: lead each page with a direct answer, then expand.
- Entity clarity: name your business, services, locations, and prices explicitly rather than implying them.
- Structured data: Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQ schema where genuinely applicable.
- Factual consistency: the same name, address, phone number, and service list everywhere you appear.
What AEO does not replace
Traditional SEO still decides whether you appear at all. Crawlability, internal linking, and page speed remain prerequisites, because an assistant cannot cite a page it never retrieved.
What this looks like for a local service business
A homeowner asks an assistant, "Who is a reliable roofer in Pasadena?" The assistant looks for businesses with clear service pages, consistent listings, and reviews that mention the job. If your site says "we do it all" without naming roofing, Pasadena, or what you charge, you are hard to recommend.
The fix is rarely exotic. Dedicated pages per service and area, plain statements of what you do and where, and FAQ answers written the way customers actually ask.
How to check where you stand
Ask the major assistants the questions your customers ask, in your area, and note who gets named. Then compare their pages with yours.
- Is your business named at all?
- Are your services and areas described correctly?
- Which competitor pages are being cited, and what do they say that yours don't?
The takeaway
Write the answer first, make your facts explicit and consistent, and keep the technical foundations clean. AEO is discipline, not a new channel.
